National Innovation Office

The National Innovation Office (NIO) has a key role in developing and implementing Hungary's science, technology and innovation policies. NIO supports financially and by institutional means the creation, dissemination and exploitation of new knowledge and technology. Its activity is financed by the Research and Technology Innovation Fund. This public funding is recycled by NIO into the Hungarian economy by supporting R&D activities, primarily through its system of calls for proposals.

Hungarian Scientific Research Fund

The Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (HSRF) has been the major funding agency of basic science and scholarship since 1986. Its "founding fathers" modelled the principles of operation on the practice of German (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and American research funds (National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health). Upon a government decree, HSRF has been operating as an independent non-profit organisation since 1991. Its mission is to provide independent support to scientific research activities and infrastructure, to promote scientific achievements of international standards, and to provide assistance to young researchers. The administrative and financial tasks related to its operation are performed by the HSRF (in Hungarian OTKA) Office in Budapest.

Researchers’ night

Researchers' night, launched in 2005 under the "Researchers in Europe" initiative, offers the large public a unique opportunity to discover the researchers and their magic world: dozens of labs, universities, enterprises, foundations...open their doors and unveil their secrets Europe wide, allowing each of you, "hand in hand" with researchers, to be scientist for a night, take part in mysterious and fascinating experiments, use sophisticated instruments, understand the magic of science and its beauty and ask any question you always wanted to ask without daring before...

The Hungarian event fits well in the Europe-wide festival series with the entertaining and serious, but “audience-friendly” scientific programmes focusing on science, researchers and society. The messages we wish to put across are the importance of science; the fully human yet important figure of the researcher carrying out his work to the benefit of the society.
